History:
The iconic Sacred Heart Marble Church was consecrated on 15th September 1918 by Archbishop Thomas O'Shea assisted by Frs Tymons and Kimbell before a large congregation. Up until the Christchurch earthquake in 2011, it remained the oldest marble Catholic Church still in use in New Zealand.
Though not recently used the church is maintained by a group of volunteers from the Golden Bay community.
Mass and Services are currently celebrated in the church hall behind the historic marble church.

Community:
We are a small, committed, supportive and welcoming community.
Due to geographic isolation and the distance from the rest of our parish we are in a uniquely isolated situation.

Property:
It is our earnest hope that we would be able to use the old marble church again. The church needs some structural seismic strengthening.
Our small congregation faces a big challenge in order to strengthen the old church and make it useable.  Therefore, we have set up a project which includes fund-raising.
The Catholic property in Takaka is to be subdivided into three sections. The properties containing the presbytery will be sold. The third property, which includes the historic marble church, will remain in church ownership.

The Sacred Heart Takaka Trust has recently been formed. It has official charitable status from IRD. The trustees are based in Golden Bay.

The Trust will:
  • be responsible for organising the seismic strengthening of the building, along with Parish Finance Committee, and then undertaking further works to make it usable.
  • be responsible for the ongoing management of the marble church and its use.  As well as church services it is envisaged the building will be available at times for appropriate use by the wider community.
  • take on management of the West Takaka cemetery at Hamama on Takaka Valley Highway.

To undertake strengthening of the marble church we have set up a fund-raising project.

The project:
  1. Subdivision is in progress. Once the land is subdivided the house will be sold. The hall will be kept until a later date.
  2. We have a detailed Structural Engineer's Assessment showing the required work and costs in order to get the church building compliant with applicable sections of the current Building Code.
  3. The building contractor has started preliminary work in preparation for steel installation.
  4. Following strengthening there will be remediation of minor parts of the original construction including re-wiring
